How Crunchyroll dual subtitles work

Dual subs: Japanese and your language
Choose the Japanese audio and watch with two subtitle lines: Japanese and English, or Japanese and your native language. Dual subs let you follow the story and hear how each line sounds in the original.

Pop-up dictionary for anime
Hover over any word in the subtitles: the episode pauses, and the pop-up dictionary shows the translation with the words around it. English to Japanese or Japanese to English, you see what the word means in this scene.

A Wordbook of Japanese words
Every word you look up goes to your Wordbook with the line it came from, so you learn new words from the scenes you remember.

Practice words in Anki or our Telegram bot
To learn new words from your Wordbook, sync it with Anki on desktop or mobile, or train them in our Telegram bot: it explains each word, checks your own example sentences with an AI tutor and brings words back with spaced repetition. The words from your favorite anime stay with you after the video ends.

- Love the feature! My English is pretty good, but I'm not native, so, sometimes a little help could be handy. The fact that now I can check the translation without distraction is awesome! And it is completely worth the few bucks of a subscription.

Can I learn Japanese with anime on Crunchyroll?
Yes. Choose a Japanese audio track and InterSub shows dual subtitles, Japanese and your language, with a pop-up dictionary for every word. On paid plans the AI subtitle translator can add Crunchyroll AI subtitles in your language when a video has none.
Seeing «Loading subtitles» that never finishes? On Crunchyroll this usually means the video has no Japanese subtitles in your region. Crunchyroll decides which subtitles and dubs each region gets, and its rules are not public: many videos, especially regional releases, have no Japanese subtitles at all, and even when they exist they may be unavailable where you are. InterSub can only use the subtitles Crunchyroll provides, so unfortunately we can't fix this on our side.
